Music Reimagined explores how musical change happens – from the breakthroughs of the 1950s to the emerging sounds and practices of today. Through reviews, features and historical perspectives, it places artists and recordings within a wider context. It considers how new ideas, emerging music technologies, and shifts in cultural conditions and habits of listening help bring about musical change.
What happens when musicians decide the old ways of making music are no longer enough?
From Stravinsky and Miles Davis to the Beatles, Brian Eno, Björk, Holly Herndon and Marina Herlop, Music Reimagined follows the artists, recordings and ideas that have expanded what music can become. Crossing boundaries between classical, jazz, popular and experimental music, it traces unexpected connections across generations - musicians transforming existing possibilities, reopening paths first explored decades earlier, and creating music that can still make us think, I’ve never heard anything quite like this before.

Regular reviews and listening notes explore albums, artists and recordings that have opened up new musical possibilities - from experimental song forms and electronic textures to improvised music, contemporary composition, hybrid folk traditions, ambient soundworlds and emerging new modalities.
Together they follow the increasing mixture of forms, styles and practices through which new musical languages continue to emerge.
The Companion Books
The two companion volumes develop the central ideas behind the site.
Music Reimagined: Creating and Listening traces the historical evolution of modern music from the mid-twentieth century onwards, exploring how recording, amplification, broadcasting, studio production, electronics and new listening cultures transformed what music could become.
Music Reimagined: New Modalities turns to the present, examining contemporary artists whose work no longer fits comfortably within inherited genres, and asking how new technologies, global exchanges and changing listening habits are producing new musical forms.
The Online Museum of Musical Discovery
The Music Reimagined Museum explores the technologies, instruments, media, places, ideas and cultural conditions that have influenced - and continue to influence - the changing ways in which music is created, shared and heard.
It is not a physical museum, but a curated online space for exploring the circumstances that allow new sounds and forms to emerge.
Music Reimagined
Music Reimagined is independently produced and editorially led by Tristram Shepard, a writer, musician and long-time researcher into musical change.
Reviews, recommendations and museum selections are chosen for musical and critical interest - not sponsorship, paid placement or commercial partnership.
The aim is simple: to help curious listeners discover new music, place it in a wider historical context, and follow the continuing evolution of musical form, sound and listening.
How This Site Is Made
The site explores the ways new technologies reshape musical creation, and its own development has naturally involved a careful process of human–AI collaboration.
AI has been used as a research, drafting and editorial partner: helping to test ideas, organise material, refine language and explore alternative ways of explaining complex musical developments. However, please remember that both human-beings and AI can sometimes make mistakes and hallucinate.
